Older Women Opting for ‘Grankinis’

August 31st, 2010 by admin No comments »

Women over fifty are daring to bare by shedding the one-piece and reclaiming the bikini.

Dame-Helen-MirrenStars such as 65-year-old Dame Helen Mirren have recently been spotted sporting a two-piece, dubbed the grankini, boosting its popularity amongst older women.

And with advances in swimsuit technology there are now more bikinis tailored to suit the more mature figure.

In the same way that a bra offers support, bikinis now have built-in mesh and gauge wires and wider straps to shape the bust. The waistline on the bottoms has also been raised.

Over the last two years sales of the increasingly popular grankinis have soared by 118 per cent, according to major retailer Debenhams, with rising sales driven by women in their fifties and sixties.

Sasha Nagalingham, the store’s swimwear buyer, said: “A full costume on an older lady instantly says ‘granny’; but a supportive, well-proportioned bikini is less ageing and accentuates rather than hides natural shape.”

In the past few years 71 per cent of women aged between 50 and 65 have ditched the ‘granny-like’ one-piece for a daring new grankini.

A New Way to Wear Your Tan Line…

August 24th, 2010 by admin No comments »

Most of us hate getting tan lines on holiday and do everything we can to make sure that we don’t get any dodgy ones. There’s nothing worse than dressing up in the evening and having your pink and white bits on show.

KiSkin-bikiniWell, Italian designer KiSkin is trying to banish these horrible tan line thoughts by launching a bikini which leaves a cheeky tan mark. The bikini bottoms have a cute, heart-shaped hole for a fun holiday reminder, with the aim of turning tan lines from an undesireable look to “something to look at.”

KiSkin said “”Our product is designed to go beyond the traditional bikini conception, transforming a simple piece of clothing into a real creative instrument.”

Kerry Katona in Melissa Odabash

August 20th, 2010 by admin No comments »

Kerry Katona has set tongues wagging this week as she attended the premier of Angelina Jolie’s new film, Salt.

In the film, Angelina plays Evelyn Salt who’s a CIA agent on the run after being named a Russian spy.

Kerry Katona hit the specially designed “Salt” black and white carpet wearing one of our stunning Melissa Odabash Hermione kaftans, in a gorgeous bird print. Some are slating her for wearing a kaftan to a Hollywood film premiere, but to be quite honest we think she looks pretty good in it, and let’s face it, a Melissa Odabash kaftan isn’t any old Kaftan off the high street, it will set you back a £320, but it’s worth every penny.

The Salt premiere took place at London’s Leicester Square’s Empire, where a host of celebrities including the X Factors Joe McEldery and Leona Lewis, Swimmer Rebecca Adlington (fresh from her Euro Swim Champion victory) and Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman watched as Angelina soaked up the atmosphere signing autographs and posing for the cameras.

Event aims to bash bikini record

August 19th, 2010 by admin No comments »

6293342An attempt to break the world record for the largest number of women photographed in one place while wearing a bikini will be held later this month in the Costa Blanca, Spain.

Bikini Bash 2010 will be held on August 28 at Chiringuitos Del Sol on Campoamor beach, Orihuela Costa.

As well as the all-important official count and photo shoot, the event will include music and entertainment from 4pm until 9pm.

Previous attempts to take the title have met with mixed success. While one show attracted more than 2,000 people, just 43 women showed up at a separate event in Southend, Essex.

Organisers say they will also attempt to break the record for the largest number of women walking around a set circuit while wearing bikinis, currently held by Japan with 323.

Top Picks of the Caribbean Beaches

August 4th, 2010 by admin No comments »

We all know that when we take a trip to the Caribbean that whatever beach we land ourselves on is going to be beautiful; but amongst the beautiful are some real gems, and here’s our top picks…

Conception Island

Conception Island is one of the Bahamas’ far-out islands which dots the eastern reaches of the archipelago and the only people that know about it are sailors and scuba divers who sail out on there liveboards or long-range day boats. The sheer coral wall which is one of the most dramatic underwater sights in the world is what attract the scuba divers and snorkellers. There are two, long, pristine beaches which offer a rewarding sight for those who make it here, as well as a prime nesting area for endangered turtles. The whole island, including neighbouring Booby Cay, is a protected national park. The water that surrounds Conception Island is as clear and clean as you will find.

Petit Tabac

In the film, Pirates of the Caribbean, the slightly crazy but loveable Captain Jack Sparrow relates the horrors of of being stranded on a small desert island. He’s later dumped on the same spot with Elizabeth Swann, who soon discovers that Sparrow’s first visit involved nothing more horrible than drinking rum on a perfect beach – not far from the modern days of a Caribbean holiday. The director picked Petit Tabac for this scene, undoubtedly for it’s soft, deep sand which is crowned by a stunning shock of green palms; one of St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ dazzling diamonds within the Tobago Cays National Marine Park.

Sandy Island

Storms and the currents constantly move there way through Sandy Island. One year the wind will topple palms and waves will scoop away the sand, and the next year (or even the next week), visitors will discover a newly formed stretch of beach, and the lagoon there may have changed shape.  What doesn’t change is the long stretch of sand which leads to a fabulous reef for snorkellers to explore. You can see the lush green hills of Carriacou not far across the channel. Snorkellers can carry themselves with a few kicks over a deep drop-off where they will be able to watch large rays and pelagic fish pass them by.

Mopion

Mopion, possibly one of the most picturesque beaches, with a dollop of sand in the middle, surrounded by beautiful clear waters has made appearance on several magazine covers and it’s no surprise really. Photographers who get the chance to visit St. Vincent and the Grenadines find there most perfect beach shots here. There’s not a single palm tree on Mopion, the only shade you will find here is from a thatched umbrella. A nearby private-island resort, Petit St. Vincent will be found setting up beach picnics along the sand for their guests, while yachties and those staying on Matreau or Union Island use Mosion as a snorkelling and tanning day trip.

Isla Saona

Isla Saona is a part of the Parque Nacional del Este in the Dominican Republic, where no hotels or resorts will ever be found on it’s stunning palm-lined beaches. However, Saona’s not quite a deserted island, it has a couple of small fishing settlements and holiday makers from the Bayahibe, La Romana and Punta Cana resorts can visit a small village where they will find casual restaurants and a group of shacks full with Art Naif. Somehow, the development doesn’t detract from the natural beauty and attractions of the island, like fantastic snorkelling, miles of pure sandy beaches and a submerged sandbar covered with a universe of starfish. It could be because it is the Dominican Republic and it would seem abnormal to find anywhere there where music isn’t playing and someone isn’t at the ready to teach you merengue.

US model Caprice has been snapped wearing one of her personal swimwear designs while holidaying in Mediterranean France.

6843589The 38-year-old Californian was in St Tropez last week wearing a candy-striped bikini from her By Caprice range. The piece is called Nautical and has a £30 price tag.

On holiday with a female friend, Caprice is apparently quiet about her new “ordinary Irish man”.

In a recent interview with the Irish Herald, she said: “There may be someone on the scene. He’s not famous. He’s just an ordinary guy. He’s not a sportsman or an actor or a celebrity of any sort. That’s all I’m saying.”

Serena swaps skirts for swimwear

July 9th, 2010 by admin No comments »

Tennis star Serena Williams is set to grace the pages of Harper’s Bizarre magazine, swapping her tennis skirt for a swimsuit.

The 28-year-old tennis champion said she always wanted to have the same body as her sister Venus, but accepted that she ‘wasn’t like’ her sibling when she reached the age of 23.

serena-williamsSerena, who will appear in the magazine’s August issue, certainly appears to be more at ease with her body image now as she put on an Eres-designed swimsuit for the photo shoot.

The star, who split up from her boyfriend Common in April, spoke about the differences between her body and her sister’s. She said: “She’s totally different. I’m super curvy.

“I have big boobs and this massive butt. She’s tall and she’s like a model and she fits everything.”

Serena has previously appeared in swimwear for Sports Illustrated, slipping into a white bikini for a shoot in February 2003.

The star, who is now more accepting of her body shape, said that when she was growing up she was always “wanting to look like her sister” or “wanting to be” her sister and trying to get into her clothes, but she realised that after a while she could not.

She added: “But it’s fine. Now I’m obviously good, but it’s a weird thing.

“Since I don’t look like every other girl, it takes a while to be okay with that. To be different. But different is good.”

necker-island

You can live the life of the stars and experience the tropical vacation yourself with your guests by “renting” the whole island where you can stay in the cliff-side villas with you’re own swimming pool and surrounding views of the sea.

The island which is situated between Tortola and Anegada was previously uninhabited until Sir Richard Branson bought it in the 1970s. Branson has developed several residences here over the years as well as the main house, the airy Balinese Villa. A favourite with rock stars, royalty and movie stars, Necker Island is pure paradise in the Caribbean.

There’s more staff here than there are guest, offering a first class service and catering to your every want and need. You can enjoy a tropical cocktail in the indoor garden or on one of the terraces which overlook the British Virgin Islands, just a few minutes away by boat or helicopter.

Meals are as formal or as informal as you like and at the time and place you desire. Your very own staff can prepare a light lobster lunch with fresh fruit served in the shaded pagoda, at the beach pool’s floating dining pavilion, or in the 26-seat dining room with silver, lace, linen and crystal place settings for a more formal affair.

At Necker Island you can make your ideal holiday, do what you want, when you want in the perfect surroundings. What could be better than an escape to an unforgettable island out of the normal hustle and bustle of every day life?
